He is inspired by the real life of Anthony John "Ant" Spilotro, a lawman in the Chicago Outfit.

Nicky Santoro was a childhood friend of Sam "Ace" Rothstein, as well as his best friend at the time.

When the Mafia decided to move to Las Vegas to extort the profits of the Tangiers Casino, they chose Ace to run the casino while Nicky was assigned to protect it.
